Bergen moves into second on GC in Redlands

Holds onto best climber's jersey

Rally Cycling’s Sara Bergen finished third in the Highland circuit stage of the Redlands Bicycle Classic on Friday. Bergen moved into second on the general classification and maintained her lead in the best climber competition by a slender one-point margin. Kirsti Lay finished eighth on the stage while Katherine Maine featured in the main breakaway of the day.

Saturday’s downtown criterium is known as one of the toughest criteriums on the calendar. It’ll be a throwdown for time bonuses and sprint points. Notoriously hard to control, Sunday’s Sunset loop road race will be the last chance to move up in the general classification.

Team Director Zach Bell on the battle for yellow

“The team is riding really well. We’re doing the job and mostly getting it right. UHC is managing to keep the ship upright for now. The ladies did a good job of keeping the pressure on during the stage and getting Katie Hall fairly isolated.

“We’re now second overall with two more chances at stage wins. It’s never been a good position to be trailing Katie on GC but we’re going to give it all we got!”
