Curtis White Wins Rochester Twilight Criterium

Last Lap Attack Yields Victory, Erica Allar Finishes Second In Women’s Race

Under the streetlights of downtown Rochester, New York, Curtis White powered to an emphatic victory in the second to last Pro Road Tour (PRT) event of the 2017 season. On a fast and technical course, White and teammate Tom Soladay both made the night’s decisive seven-man breakaway. Throughout the evening, Soladay drove the pace, assuring the win would come from the group. With six laps to go Soladay put in a strong attack that forced the others to chase and gave White a chance to recover heading into the finale. On the final lap, White made a bold move on the backside of the course, and entering the finishing straight held a slight lead. He powered across the line with plenty of time to raise his arms in victory.

"It was fast,” said White. “The pace was high all night. Tom was fantastic; he initiated the move, was the breakaway’s main engine and then softened everyone’s legs at the end. We started the night with only two riders, so the strategy was to see how the race played out and ride to our strengths. With both of us in the move, we had some cards to play, but we were thinking of the sprint. On the last lap, there was a lull in the pace, so I punched it. I never had a big gap, and they were closing fast! I am thrilled to get the win for myself and the team.”

In the women’s race, Erica Allar flew her stars and stripes jersey of National Criterium Champion to a strong second place. Allar was joined on the start line by Katherine Maine and Monica Volk. The trio worked well to control the peloton and keep the pack together in the hopes of a sprint victory from Allar. In the run for the line, Allar was pipped by Beck Wiasak (Fearless Femme Racing). The Rochester Twilight Criterium marks the final race of an incredible season for Allar as she returns to Georgia to resume work on her master’s degree at Piedmont College. In addition to her National Criterium Championship, Allar’s 2017 win count includes two national collegiate titles and a stage of Tulsa Tough.

“It has been an astounding season with the team, but the fall semester started last Wednesday," said Allar. "I now have to get my head out of the clouds and into the books!”
