Lay finishes second on final stage of Redlands

Bergen defends second overall

Rally Cycling’s Kirsti Lay finished second on the final stage of the Redlands Bicycle Classic on Sunday. Lay escaped the peloton on the final circuit of Sunset Loop and gained enough time on the decimated peloton to move into fourth on the general classification. Sara Bergen finished fifth on the stage to defend second place overall, while Sara Poidevin finished eighth on GC. Thanks to a full-team effort all week, the Rally Cats left California with the team classification win.

Kirsti on returning from a knee injury and Sunday’s throwdown

“We really went all in today to try and get yellow for Bergen. We went down swinging and the whole team emptied themselves. It’s great to come away with a podium in the race especially with how hard we raced our bikes today but unfortunately, I was pretty empty in the finale and couldn’t seal the deal for the girls. It’s definitely encouraging for me personally though as it was a hard winter for me with injury but every race I feel better and I know my fitness is coming along which makes me excited for the upcoming races.

“Today we wanted to put pressure on UHC from the start and rest Bergen so she could go to work later in the race. We got the yellow jersey down to only have 1-2 teammates and Poido and I just kept attacking until I got away and then Bergen tried everything to come across. We seem to be getting stronger together every race so it’s great leading into Tour of California.”
