White sprints to podium in Belgium

One podium, 11th overall for Rally in BeNe Ladies Tour debut

Rally finished the BeNe Ladies Tour this weekend, it’s most prestigious stage race of the 2018 calendar. The team showed grit by overcoming a number of crashes and taking a podium finish. Kelly Catlin finished 11th on the general classification thanks to her strong performance in the stage 2B time trial while White finished 12th overall.

The highlight of the week was White sprinting to third on stage 2A of the BeNe Ladies Tour in Sint-Laureins, Belgium on Saturday. The 98 km stage ended in a hectic field sprint where White’s teammates put her in prime position to launch her sprint against the world’s best. The result was White’s first European podium of her young career.

“This third place finish is special because the team placed a lot of trust in me and gave everything they had to have a shot at the finish,” said White. “We always aim for the top step of the podium, but it’s a big step for us knowing that we’re close and we’re capable.”

The stage was held in the Belgium-Netherlands border town on Sint-Laurens and was a perfect mix of Dutch crosswinds and Belgian cobblestones. The bunch split on a number of occasions due to the furious pace and crashes throughout the day.

Emma White bridging to the lead group in the crosswinds on stage 2A.

“Early in the race, crosswinds split the field and we got caught out,” said White. “Kelly Catlin and I attacked through the cobbles and into the crosswinds to form a smaller group and bridge to the lead group.”

With higher speeds and larger field sizes, the European races require the ability to improvise and that’s what White did.

“In the last kilometer of the race we got separated and there was a lot of reshuffling in the field,” said White. “I was further back than I would have liked to be. At 500 meters to go, we hit a headwind and I was able to find small gaps that lead me to the front. When my nose hit in the wind at 100 meters to go, I gave it everything I had and was able to grab third.”

In the race’s 113 km finale in Zelzate on Sunday, the team endured a number of crashes en route to a nail-bitingly close fourth place sprint finish from White.
