Amy Benner was encouraged to be physically active from an early age and engaged in a variety of sports including softball, horseback riding, cross-country running and backpacking. She started cycling as a commuter in college before doing some of the local group rides and was encouraged to race. A return to school and racing at the collegiate level led to top results and earned her a spot in the professional peloton for 2017.

What inspired you to ride?

I've always loved cycling – I think it's the meditative part of it, and maybe the adventure part of it too. It's my happy place. The more I did it, the better I liked it.

Racing obstacle you overcame?

Balancing my final semester of teaching school and the 2016 racing season was a huge challenge. It was very hard. I was running on no sleep for four months.

Favorite cheat meal?

Burgers, fries and Oreos – especially the Oreos.

Favorite healthy meal or snack?

Favorite healthy snack is apples and almond butter. Also, I like avocados with Cholula sauce.

Tip for staying healthy?

Sleeping. Sometimes I don't take my advice, but it doesn't change the fact that sleep is the best thing ever.

What motivates you to ride?

Riding makes me happy! It feeds a part of my soul that nothing else can.
