You’ll never know if you don’t try, you’ll never discover if you don’t wander, and you’ll never succeed without determination

Monica Volk’s first ride on skinny wheels was on the velodrome near her home of Trexlertown, PA. After participating in one of the community programs at the local velodrome as an activity to cross train for tennis, which she played throughout high school. The program taught Volk how to ride a fixed gear and then how to race it. It was a fun and exhilarating experience and she became hooked on the sport ever since. When not on the bike, she is a senior at Penn State University working towards a degree in Toxicology.

What inspired

The awesome and exhilarating feeling of riding on the track close to my home in Trexlertown, PA. Not being afraid to try something new is how I found the sport.

Racing obstacle you overcame?

A severe cramping issue last July at Cascade was one of the most painful and learning experiences for me. It was a definitely a learning experience for the importance of taking in enough fluids.

Homemade birthday cakes because it’s usually not my birthday and there seems to often be birthdays to celebrate

Favorite healthy meal or snack?

Quinoa mixed with cooked veggies, chickpeas, some olive oil and spices.

Tip for staying healthy?

Spend time outdoors. There are so many fun activities to do in the great outdoors; so mix it up, grab a friend, get moving and get some of that natural Vitamin D!

What motivates

The views, the feels, the exercise, and the company, even when it’s just myself sometimes. Having a goal for the day gives my rides purpose towards the bigger goal of becoming a better athlete and bike racer.
